What to Expect During Your Open Water Diver Course

Your Open Water Diver Gran Canaria course combines online theory, practical training in confined water and four open water training dives in the Atlantic Ocean.

The course is designed to take you from your first scuba skills through to becoming a confident and independently certified recreational diver.

1. PADI eLearning and Knowledge Development

Your course begins with PADI eLearning, allowing you to complete the theory conveniently online using your computer, tablet or smartphone.

You will learn about scuba equipment, dive planning, pressure and its effects, buoyancy, underwater communication, safety procedures and the basic principles of recreational scuba diving.

Completing your eLearning before arriving in Gran Canaria gives you more time to concentrate on the practical and underwater parts of your course.

2. Confined Water Training

Before progressing to the open water dives, you will practise the essential scuba diving skills in controlled, shallow-water conditions.

Your PADI professional will demonstrate each skill and give you time to practise until you are comfortable performing it yourself.

You will learn skills including regulator recovery, mask clearing, buoyancy control, equipment handling, underwater communication and safe ascent and descent procedures.

There is no rush – the aim is not simply to complete the exercises, but to understand what you are doing and become comfortable and confident underwater.

3. Open Water Training Dives

Once you are comfortable with the essential skills, it is time to put everything you have learned into practice.

Your Open Water Diver course includes four open water training dives in Gran Canaria. During these dives, you will gradually build your confidence, practise the skills you have learned and gain real diving experience in the Atlantic Ocean.

As the course progresses, you will become increasingly comfortable managing your equipment, buoyancy and movement underwater while learning how to dive safely with a buddy.

What You’ll Learn

During your Open Water Diver Gran Canaria course, you will develop the fundamental knowledge and practical skills required to become a safe and confident recreational diver.

These include:

  • Scuba equipment assembly and use
  • Mask clearing and regulator recovery

  • Safe descents and ascents
  • Underwater communication

Learn to Dive in Puerto de Mogán

Our dive centre is located directly by the beach in Puerto de Mogán in the south of Gran Canaria.

The easy access to the water and our Mogán House Reef provide excellent conditions for learning to scuba dive and gaining your first experience in the Atlantic Ocean.

During your training, you also have the opportunity to discover some of the marine life that makes diving in Gran Canaria so special. Depending on the dive site and conditions, you may encounter colourful reef fish, trumpetfish, parrotfish, rays and many other Atlantic species.

Every dive is different, so marine-life sightings can never be guaranteed – and that is part of the adventure.
