The archipelago consists of seven major islands: Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, Tenerife, La Palma, Gomera and Hierro. In addition, a number of small islands: Alegranza, Graciosa, Montaña Clara, Roque del Este, Roque del Oeste and Lobos. The islands are distinctly different and unique, due to their volcanic origin, with several million year age difference.
Their geographical location generally offers good winds for sailing. The Trade Winds, that brought Columbus to America, are creating a funnel effect between the islands, known as Wind Acceleration Zones. This means that even with fairly light prevailing winds, we can still find enough wind for an excellent sail in these zones. There’s plenty of sea life and several of the areas we are sailing through are designated Special Area of Conservation by the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society (WDCS).
